Out of Ore – Version 0.25
Type Major update
Release date October 3, 2024
Steam announcement View on Steam
Summary Massive overhaul of core systems including new dirt, next-gen vehicles, multiplayer, improved physics, explosives, finances and more.

Version 0.25 is one of the most transformative updates in the history of Out of Ore. It delivers the first public version of Multiplayer, a completely new next-generation vehicle system, a reworked dirt and digging engine, new physics, improved explosives, large-scale financial restructuring, and major optimizations across the entire project.

This update consolidates multiple roadmap milestones into one release, making it a pivotal foundation for Out of Ore going forward.

Development History

Version 0.25 had one of the longest and most ambitious development cycles to date. Work began shortly after the release of Version/0.21, with several large internal systems being rebuilt simultaneously.

Early Development (Late 2023 – Early 2024)

  • Initial work began on the next-generation vehicles during late summer and autumn 2023.
  • Alfred began modelling updated heavy machinery (including the new grader) in late 2023.
  • New vehicle physics, suspension systems, and hydraulic behaviour were tested and iterated on through the winter.
  • Early groundwork for multiplayer networking and synchronization also started during this period.

Dirt Engine Rewrite

Around early 2024, development began on an entirely new digging system to replace the previous dirt behaviour. This system introduced:

  • More detailed fill behaviour
  • Smooth deformable surfaces
  • Dirt that moves inside buckets
  • Improved visual consistency
  • Better stability for multiplayer

While the underlying technique is not noted publicly, the system behaves similarly to techniques such as marching cubes.

Multiplayer Preparation

From late 2023 through early 2024, major backend restructuring was completed to prepare the game for multiplayer:

  • Large parts of the engine logic were refactored
  • Inventory, vehicles, and attachments were rewritten for network-safe behaviour
  • Hydraulics and physics replication were optimized
  • Bandwidth usage was reduced from tens of KB/s down to near-zero for many vehicle operations

By spring 2024, the project reached a state where public multiplayer testing became feasible.

Friday News Teasers (2023–2024)

Throughout late 2023 and early 2024, Friday News reports showcased:

  • New suspension and drivetrain behaviour
  • Next-gen loaders and dump trucks
  • Improved cameras
  • Dirt behaviour previews
  • Multiplayer progress
  • Adjusted release targets as the scope continued to grow

The team gradually realized that multiple roadmap items (Next Gen Vehicles, Trucking, Multiplayer, Dirt Rework) would converge into a single mega-update.

Open Beta (June 2024 – October 2024)

The open beta for 0.25 was released on 13 June 2024, revealing the update to the public for large-scale testing.

The beta included:

  • The first playable multiplayer implementation
  • New vehicles
  • New digging system
  • New physics
  • Numerous UI and gameplay adjustments

The beta period included many unnumbered patches, mostly focusing on:

  • Sync issues in multiplayer
  • Vehicle physics behaviour
  • Loader and excavator tuning
  • Visual issues with dirt
  • Old save conversion
  • Audio inconsistencies
  • Gameplay bugs found by the community

This period was crucial for stability before the full release.

Patch Notes (Official 0.25 Release)

Released to the main branch on 3 October 2024.

From the Steam announcement:

  • New Dirt/Dig system
  • Added Multiplayer
  • Added Vehicles
  • Added Breakdowns
  • Better physics
  • Better explosives
  • Improved gearboxes
  • Optimized trees
  • Restructured finances
  • Overall increase in performance
  • And a lot more

This update acts as a major structural foundation for future development, enabling continued work on multiplayer, next-gen vehicles, and expanded gameplay systems.
